Mistral AI's open-source terminal coding agent powered by Devstral 2, with file editing, shell execution, and a cloud execution mode that lets sessions run remotely when the local machine is off.

Mistral Vibe launched in December 2025 as Mistral AI's entry into the terminal coding agent market, initially as a minimal CLI agent. The tool expanded significantly through early 2026: Vibe 2.0 introduced Devstral 2 as the default model, VS Code extension integration, and a cloud execution platform — sessions started locally can be teleported to run on Mistral's cloud infrastructure while the developer's machine is off.

Key capabilities

Devstral 2 model — Vibe is the primary delivery vehicle for Mistral's Devstral model family, purpose-built for agentic software engineering. Devstral 2 scored 77.6% on SWE-bench Verified, competitive with frontier models at a fraction of the inference cost.

Cloud execution — The Vibe cloud platform (May 2026) allows coding sessions to continue running remotely after the user closes their laptop, with results available when they return. Sessions persist across machine restarts and can be shared with team members.

Multi-provider support — While optimised for Mistral models, Vibe supports other LLM providers, making it usable as a general-purpose agent CLI in addition to a Mistral-specific tool.

--auto-approve mode — For fully autonomous multi-step execution, the --auto-approve flag allows the agent to proceed through file edits and command execution without per-step confirmation.

Autonomy level

Level 3 — Supervised agent. The agent edits files and runs shell commands under user direction, with the --auto-approve flag available for unsupervised execution on trusted tasks.

Strengths

  • Devstral 2 provides competitive coding capability at lower cost than frontier models
  • Cloud execution mode allows long-running background tasks
  • Open source (Apache 2.0 codebase) with Mistral's backing
  • VS Code extension available alongside the CLI
  • Sessions can be started from Le Chat web and run on the same remote runtime

Limitations

  • Optimised primarily for Mistral models; other providers are secondary
  • Cloud execution mode requires a paid Mistral plan
  • Newer than established tools with a shorter track record
  • European-centric roadmap may lag US-market product features
